When do you walk your dog? Chances are it’s not smack bang in the middle of the day.
Chances are, if you’re like most of the dog owners out there, you walk your dog either first thing in the morning, or last thing when you return home from work.
The trouble is, these peak times for dog walking and play are also peak times for commuters and community activities – meaning you’re sharing the sidewalk and parks with cars, bikes, runners, school kids, sports teams, sasquatches (maybe not) and much, much more. Then… as the light gets lower, that’s when accidents happen.
How often have you heard of a pup being hit by a car, knocked over by a bike, or colliding with a runner – with the person involved saying “I just didn’t see them – the dog came out of nowhere”?
Well, today I’d like to introduce a new product to you that aims to help our dogs stay safe: Squeaker LED Poochlight Dog Collars and Leads.
Soda and I were lucky enough to put the light up collar and lead set through its paces, and here’s what we found out…
Both the collars and leads are made of a lightweight sturdy fabric with in built LED lights. The lights run in two strips covering the full length of both the collar and the lead.
All of the elements are designed for safety – from the robust webbed fabric, to the stainless steel D-ring on the collar and clip at the end of the leash. The collar also features a plastic breakaway snap-lock. This means that whilst your dog’s collar will stay firmly attached for walks, should they find themselves caught on a fence or other such object the collar will give away preventing injury, allowing your pooch to safely walk away.
The collar is also easily adjustable and gentle to the touch, ensuring premium comfort for your dog.
But enough about the basics – let’s get onto the GOOD part – the flashing lights!
It’s easy to see what sets Squeaker dog collars and leads apart from other brands – their inbuilt state of the art LED displays within the collars and leads themselves.
Once charged, both the collar and the lead’s dual light strips glow strongly – with a viewing distance of up to one kilometre (not metric? that’s half a mile!) Seriously, even with Soda’s lion like mane the collar was highly visible at all times.
That means that no matter where you are or what time of day, your dog is essentially ‘lit up’ and will not get lost in the shadows – saving them from dangerous collisions with cars, cyclists and pedestrians.
One of the most common explanations given for dogs being hit by cars or bikes is that the driver just ‘didn’t see them’. Well, with a Squeaker collar and lead, your dog is visible to everyone.
Even if you don’t walk your dog at night, the glow from the lights still adds an extra element of safety during those dusk and dawn hours – top walking times for a lot of pet owners.
In addition to these potentially life saving benefits, the collars and leads also come in useful just by allowing you to keep an eye on your pup when visibility is low at the park.
And just in case you’re wondering – no the the lights aren’t blinding or distracting when in use. While the glow is strong enough to be seen even during the day (as you can see in our photos), it does not cause any strain to yours or your pup’s eyes.
The one thing I would have loved is if the range included a light up harness – as Soda is generally more comfortable walking in a harness. However the good people at Squeaker have assured me a Squeaker Poochlight Harness is in the works and we’ll be seeing it very soon!
When I first found out about the Squeaker Poochlight range I was intrigued by the safety benefits, but also wondered how practical and easy to use they would be. I didn’t want some collar and lead that weighed a ton because of batteries, or was uncomfortable for Soda because of heavy light strips.
Luckily for me – they had pretty much thought of everything. The collar and lead is only slightly heavier than your normal fabric collar and leads, and the design of both are comfortable for both the dog and the walker.
Both the collar and lead each have a small, built in plastic battery pack (about the size of a half a matchbox) which charge the lights via USB. That’s right – no batteries required! Can I get an Amen?
Each collar and lead come with their own charging cord and charging takes 30 minutes – 1 hour. It can be done at any USB outlet (such as your computer or iPhone charger).
Once charged you simply push the button on the battery pack to turn on one of the four light settings – static glow, rapid flashing, slow flashing and OFF.
You can then get 10 hours of full use out of the battery before the collar/lead will need to be recharged. For us, the fully charged battery actually lasted longer than that, but hey – Soda and I are like Cosmos Kramer and like to push the limits. What can we say?
Squeaker Poochlight products are water resistant – which means your pooch can get caught in the rain, roll in puddles etc all the while knowing their collar is safe.
During our time testing out the set, Sydney had a number of weeks of rain with both the collar and lead holding up 100%. In fact the collar and lead were exceptionally handy during those cloudy, rainy days as they added extra visibility in the harsher weather.
The only drawback is they are not 100% water proof which means you should not submerge them in water – meaning if you have a pup that loves swimming, you will need to take their Squeaker collar off before they dive in. It also means that the products are not machine washable, however can be easily cleaned off with a damp sponge.
The last, but very important thing to note about the Squeaker dog collars and leads range is they are the real deal. These products have undergone intensive research, product development and testing to reach the market today.
As with any pet safety product, I’d always err on the side of products that have been put through their paces, such as Squeaker – rather than the cheap knock offs you’ll find elsewhere. A fake Fendi purse is one thing, yet a product that is designed to keep your best furry friend safe is where you want to go for quality.
Squeaker even has a comparison chart to reference when you are looking for a light up collar, just to see how they compare to others. Along with their 30 Day Money Back Guarantee, this gives you an extra bit of peace of mind.
Squeaker currently ships worldwide with free shipping in North America (USA & Canada) and Australia, and $10 flat rate shipping elsewhere.
